How To Axe The Sales Tax

You can avoid the sales tax by using discount mail-order suppliers.  Example: If you buy a $1000 computer, you're better off buying by mail order (and paying about $20 for shipping) than buying locally (e.g. 8% sales tax is $80.)  Look at your buying habits, and figure out which non-perishable items you buy most often.  Then buy those items from an online store that offers good discounts.  If that online store has no physical presence in your state, you'll escape paying a sales tax.  As an example, ToysRUs.com would have to charge you sales tax because their stores are everywhere, but you'll probably escape a sales tax at eToys.com.

When buying a car, it may be worthwhile to go to a state with no sales tax (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon.)  You could save a thousand dollars or more, but it can be a complicated legal process.  In some states you may have to pay a sales tax or "use tax" when you attempt to register your new car in your home state.

How To Axe The Sales Tax

Time to complete:  You actually save time by shopping online where there's no sales tax, rather than driving to the store.
Money you'll spend:  $0
What you'll get:  Hundreds of dollars every year.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Take note of items on your shopping list that you could buy more efficiently by mail order.

  2. Over the course of the year, buy these items by mail order.  Use a discount online store, or a shopping agent like MySimon.com.
