Cutting Excess Luxuries

It's often amazing how much we have that we don't use.  Take a look at your own household belongings, and make a list of how much of it you haven't used in the past year.  Here's a list of ways you may be able to save money or even generate some extra cash:

Ideas for cutting wasteful luxuries:

  1. Do you really use your car that much?  You could get a trade-in for a smaller and older car, or sell it yourself for some immediate cash.  You'll save on insurance for an older car too.

  2. Do you have some old stuff that you never use anymore?  Hold a garage sale, or put it up for auction at eBay and other sites.  Maybe there are some collectible items in that old junk that would sell well... if you think something you own might be a collectible, you can find out by doing a search at eBay to see how much people are selling that type of item for.

  3. If you don't want to take the time to sell something, consider donating it to charity and taking a tax deduction.

  4. Does your home have some unused space?  If it doesn't, maybe it will after you clear out the junk you don't use anymore!  If you have extra space, you could get a roommate, rent a room to a college student, or move elsewhere while you sell or lease out the entire home.

  5. Your day-to-day luxury expenses can really add up.  For example, if you eat out often, you can cut expenses by going to cheaper restaurants.  You can also take your own cans of pop, which can be bought for 15-20 cents apiece, rather than paying about a dollar for the same thing from fast-food restaurants.  Take some potato chips along, instead of buying fries.  That will save you about another dollar.  Or, eat your regular meal at home and then have fun going out for dessert.
