Get 100%-Free Long Distance Calling

Most long distance calling is convenient and inexpensive.  But if you want to save even more money, you may want to take advantage of mostly-free internet long-distance services.

Skype is the Internet's most popular internet phone service.  You can quickly download software and start placing Internet calls, to any PC in the world, and realize tremendous savings over traditional phone rates.  Skype has some excellent features:

  • Good sound quality. The digital sound quality is great, much improved over that of five years ago.

  • A separate technology. You can use both internet calling and keep your regular long distance connection (they don't affect each other.) Free internet calls. Calls made from one computer to another are totally free.

  • Cheap phone calls. Long distance calls to ordinary phone numbers (including calls to cell phones) cost about 2¢/minute, even international calls.

  • Lots of extras. While you're talking to someone, you can simultaneously text-chat, send and/or receive video using a webcam, send files, use voicemail, and include up to five people (a.k.a. "conference calls").

  • A special Internet calling number. You can get a separate phone number just for internet calling. If you travel with a laptop, people can call you on your laptop.

  • Little or no hardware needed. Laptops already have a microphone and speakers; for a desktop, consider buying a $15 headset.

  • Flexible billing. You can pay with PayPal, checks, credit cards or bank account debiting.

Here's how to use this popular service:
