Get An Expense Account And Fringe Benefits

An expense reimbursement account is actually better than a raise.  It means tax-free reimbursements for you, and your employer saves money because they don't have to pay any Social Security tax on those payments.

See the Fringe Benefits article of the Business Tax section for more ideas on tax-saving fringe benefits.  If you don't think you can get a raise, try asking for an expense account.  If your employer expresses a concern that you may overuse your expense account, offer to limit expenses to parking, mileage and other pre-approved expenses.

Get An Expense Account And Fringe Benefits

Time to complete:  5-10 minutes talking with the boss, then waiting for it to come through.
Money you'll spend:  $0
What you'll get:  Hundreds of dollars in savings, through tax-free expenses.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Think of the reasons why you deserve an expense account.  Try to think of good work that you've done, and ways you can improve the efficiency and profitability of the organization you work for.  You may need something to trade on.

  2. Meet with your manager and point out the reasons why the organization should give you an expense account, including the Social Security tax savings.  Portray it as a way for the company can save money while benefiting its employees.  Ask "Da Boss" what he thinks about rewarding employees who come forward with ideas that improve the profit picture.

  3. If you don't get an expense account right then and there, all is not lost.  If you pointed out how it would benefit the organization, it may come down the pike later.
