How To Add Content To Your Site
So far, I've barely spoken a word about adding content
to your site. The reason for this is that many people have the mistaken
notion that in order to succeed on the Internet, they need to create a
really snazzy-looking site with all the bells, whistles and "sticky content"
that the big sites have. That's not true: your site just needs to look
respectable.
If you're aiming to receive revenue
from Associate Programs, you don't necessarily even want people to stick
around on your site. You just want them to click through to the site
you're associated with, to buy something there. The only "content" that is needed is a brief article
that recommends the product you're selling. To get that click,
list the best points about the product you're selling. If you bought it yourself, add your own
personal observations and recommendation. Close by repeating
your best selling point, then urge the visitor to acquire the product.
Nevertheless, there are
a few reasons why you may want to spend a little more time developing
content:
- You want to give other web sites a good reason to link to you.
- If you can add some usefulness and/or enjoyment to the experience of people visiting your site,
there's a slightly higher chance that they will buy from you.
- It's fun to create a good-looking, enjoyable site.
- Good content can keep a few people coming back to your site.
But don't count on much more than a 10-20% increase in traffic, because
people tend to have no loyalty on the Internet. What loyalty they do
have, is given to more famous sites than yours or mine.
- If you really have something important to say, you may want
to write some articles for your site. Artists may want to
add graphics, game designers may want to make their site a really fun place,
and so on. That's great! Just don't expect to make much money at
it, because there's a million other people with similar ambitions.
- It's extremely important to include advertising on your site,
which you can only do if it has some attention-getting content. The
best place for a beginner to get ads is from Google AdSense.
Don't go overboard when you add content to your pages. Too
much extra content could make for slow-loading pages, which will lose you
customers. And
you don't want to distract customers from the money-making links that you want them to
click on.
